NVQ 2 & 3 Motor Vehicle - Service
This NVQ is a work-based qualification that is suitable for anyone who undertakes motor vehicle servicing and repair activities.
What qualification will I achieve?
City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 and/or Level 3 in Motor Vehicle - Service & Repair.
How long is the course?
The NVQ is work-based and is designed to reflect the skills and knowledge of people who work in motor vehicle body repair occupations. The qualification is taken over 12-18 months depending on each individual.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, only that the candidates undertake related activities.
How will I learn?
You are usually employed for 30 hours per week. You train both in the workplace and at college. You will work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
You will also:
- Receive tuition to support the underpinning knowledge required for your NVQ.
- Have the opportunity to work towards additional qualifications relevant to your employment.
What subjects will I study?
NVQ 2 in Motor Vehicle Service and Repair
Light Vehicle Technician
This area involves working on light vehicles not exceeding 7.5 tonnes.
The work will involve:
- Carrying out routine vehicle maintenance
- Fault finding
- Rectifying simple system faults by replacing and testing components and units and Inspecting vehicles.
Fast-Fit Technician
Technicians are required to be highly skilled and trained with a wide knowledge of different vehicle makes and have good levels of communication.
The work will involve the repair and servicing of cars and light vans and will include:
- Identifying faulty components
- removal and replacement of components
- liaising with customers
- fault finding techniques.
NVQ 3 in Motor Vehicle Service and Repair.
Light Vehicle Technician
The work will include:
- Carrying out routine vehicle maintenance
- Diagnosing and rectifying complex system faults
- Inspecting vehicles.
How will I be assessed?
The NVQ is assessed on practical aptitude and a portfolio of work.
What opportunities will this lead to?
Employment in a garage setting. Level 3 can progress into Higher Education.
