The National General Certificate is aimed at anyone working in, or wishing to further their career in, Health and Safety.  It is ideal for Managers, Safety Advisors, Safety Representatives and anyone interested in making their workplace a safer environment. The certificate helps delegates to manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview to Health & Safety in the Workplace, and is a sound basis for further professional study.

NEBOSH NGC also meets the academic requirements for Technician membership (TechIOSH) of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and Associate membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).

What qualification will I achieve?

NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.

How long is the course?

The NEBOSH National Certificate is typically delivered over 10 days as follows:
Block Release:
2 x 5 day blocks, a half day for the practical assessment and one full day to undertake both written examinations.
In addition to the taught sessions, candidates should expect to contribute approximately 49 hours of private study and background reading in order to maximise their learning experience.

What are the entry requirements?

It is strongly recommended that delegates starting the National General Certificate hold a formal qualification in Health and Safety such as the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate or the CIEH Level 3 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace.  In addition candidates should have good standards of written and oral communication in order to complete the assessment(s), along with the ability to analyse information, to seek advice and to work as part of a team.

How will I learn?

A mixture of classroom delivery, practical exercises, group discussions and group activities.

What subjects will I study?

The syllabus is divided into two taught units (NGC1 & NGC2) and a practical unit (NGC3):

NGC1 Management of Health & Safety:

• Health and Safety Foundations
• Health & Safety Policy
• Organising for Health and Safety
• Promoting a Positive Health & Safety Culture
• Risk Assessment
• Principles of Control
• Monitoring review and audit
• Incident and accident investigation, recording and reporting

NGC2 Controlling Workplace Hazards:

• Movement of People and Vehicles – Hazards and Control
• Manual and Mechanical Handling Hazards and Control
• Work Equipment Hazards and Control
• Electrical - Hazards and Control
• Fire - Hazards and Control
• Chemical and Biological Health Hazards and Control
• Physical and Psychological Health Hazards and Control
• Construction Activities Hazards and Control

NGC3 Health & Safety Practical Application
This unit assesses the candidates’ ability to carry out an independent safety inspection of a workplace and then prepare a report to management to demonstrate their findings.

How will I be assessed?

Both Unit NGC1 and NGC2 are assessed by two-hour written exam in which all questions are compulsory.  Both exams consist of ten short answer questions and one long answer question.  In order to pass the written exams, candidates must achieve a minimum of 45 % on each paper (45 marks out of a possible 100).
Unit NGC3 is assessed by a two-hour practical exam. 

Candidates will conduct an independent inspection of areas within the college, identifying hazards, deciding if any controls are in place and if they are adequate and where necessary suggesting appropriate remedial actions.  Once the inspection is over, candidates will then write a report to management with a persuasive argument for changes to be made, explaining why action is needed and identifying remedial measures and any cost implications.  To pass NGC3 candidates must receive a mark of 60% or more (60 marks out of a possible 100),
