The NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety can form a key part of your company’s supervisory or management development programme as those who successfully achieve the qualification will have a sound understanding of the principles of risk management, enabling them to build an effective safety culture in the company.  Smaller construction companies will find that the qualification helps them meet the requirements of clients and principal contractors when working on other people’s sites or premises.

The National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety is aimed at those working in the construction industry that is required to ensure that activities under their control are undertaken safely.  It is likely to prove useful to Supervisors, Managers and CDM Co-coordinators and those concerned with the management of buildings who need to ensure that contractors and temporary workers are operating safely.

How long is the course?

NGC1 is delivered over 5 consecutive days. NCC1 is delivered over 8 consecutive days (excluding weekends and bank-holidays). There will also be attendance for the 2 written exams. Written exam dates are externally set by NEBOSH - thesea are usually a Thursday and Friday morning.

In addition to the taught sessions, candidates should expect to contribute approximately 52 hours of private study and background reading in order to maximise their learning experience.

What are the entry requirements?

It is strongly recommended that delegates starting the National Construction Certificate hold a formal qualification in Health and Safety such as the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate or the CIEH Level 3 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace.  In addition candidates should have good standards of written and oral communication in order to complete the assessment(s), along with the ability to research and analyse information, to seek advice and to work as part of a team.

How will I learn?

A mixture of classroom delivery, practical exercises, group discussions and group activities.

The syllabus is divided into two taught units (NGC1 & NCC1) and a practical unit (NCC2):

NGC1 Management of Health & Safety:

  • Principles of Control
  • Monitoring review and audit
  • Incident and accident investigation, recording and reporting

Unit NCC1 Managing and Controlling Hazards in Construction Activities

  • Construction Law and Management
  • Construction Site Hazards and Control
  • Movement of People and Vehicles (hazards and control)
  • Manual and Mechanical Handling (hazards and control)
  • Work Equipment (hazards and control)
  • Electrical Hazards and Control
  • Fire Hazards and Control –
  • Chemical and Biological Health Hazards and Control
  • Physical and Psychological Health Hazards and Control
  • Working at Height (hazards and control)
  • Excavation Work and Confined Spaces (hazards and control)
  • Demolition Hazards and Control

NCC2 Construction Health & Safety Practical Application
This unit assesses the candidates’ ability to carry out an independent safety inspection of a construction site and then prepare a report to management to demonstrate their findings.

How will I be assessed?

Both Unit NGC1 and NCC1 are assessed by two-hour written exam in which all questions are compulsory.  Both exams consist of ten short answer questions and one long answer question.  In order to pass the written exams, candidates must achieve a minimum of 45 % on each paper (45 marks out of a possible 100).

Unit NCC2 is assessed by a two-hour practical exam.  Candidates will conduct an independent inspection of a construction workplace, identifying hazards, deciding if they are adequately controlled and where necessary suggesting appropriate remedial actions.  Once the inspection is over, candidates will then write a report to management with a persuasive argument for changes to be made, explaining why action is needed and identifying remedial measures and any cost implications.  To pass NCC2 candidates must receive a mark of 60% or more (60 marks out of a possible 100),
