Aromatherapy VTCT Level 3 Diploma
What qualification will I achieve?
VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy.
How long is the course?
The course is 34 weeks long and attendance is in the evenings, weekly for four hours. This will include practical work in the College salon and theory. The College salon is run as a commercial salon and is open to the general public who pay for all treatments.
What are the entry requirements?
A good basic education is required. A caring approach and good communication skills are an asset. An interest in the subject is essential. It would be desirable to have a Body Massage qualification prior to studying Aromatherapy.
There is a pre-requisite requirement of Units VR02 and VR74 Health, Safety, Security and Employment Standards to this qualification, which can be completed simultaneously. You will be required to attend extra sessions to achieve this qualification. VR02, VR74 units are valid for three years from completion.
How will I learn?
This course is for people interested in complementary therapies. Aromatherapy is the specialist application of essential oils which is used in a variety of contexts including uplift, relaxation, stress relief and remedial not subject to medical prohibition and connected to palliative care.
High standards of personal appearance and conduct will be required.
The critical aspects of this qualification are the decision making concerned with the safe blending of essential oils and their appropriateness in use based upon client assessment. There are over 30 essential oils to be used and a wide range of carrier oils.
The Aromatherapy treatment areas are: head, neck, limbs and trunk.
You will learn about the following:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Spiritual, moral, ethical, social and cultural issues
- Salon practices, health and safety and salon hygiene
- Assess the clients and blend oils for aromatherapy
- Provide Aromatherapy
- Demonstrate consultation skills for therapy assessments
How will I be assessed?
All the practical work is assessed in the salon on clients; practical work and oral questions prove knowledge. There are written tasks on anatomy and physiology and health and safety. Also there is a written exam on health and safety and supporting employment standards and a portfolio of evidence will be built up throughout the course.
You will need to do case studies (at least 30 treatments – i.e. 6 clients x 5 treatments or 5 clients x 6 treatments)
Home study and practice will be required.
You will need to build up your client/model base for practice or assessments
What opportunities will this lead to?
VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy is a professional qualification that would enable you to carry out this professional treatment in a salon, health farm, spa, etc.
Further study may be other complementary therapies such as Advanced Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage or Beauty Therapy.
Are there any additional costs?
There is a dress code of plain purple tunic and brown trousers (uniform to be purchased through college) and low heeled closed toe shoes.
There is a kit that will be purchased through the college which comprises of all the oils required to use for practice and case studies at college or home and also you will be required to purchase insurance. Please ask Heather Robinson or Isabela Braithwaite for more details and costing.
