This NVQ is appropriate for anyone employed in the construction industry who carries out a range of activities

What qualification will I achieve?

You will be awarded a Site Carpentry and Joinery NVQ at Level 2.

How long is the course?

This course typically takes 36 weeks to complete; this is dependent on the candidate's previous experience within the sector. Attendance is by Block/evening release and workplace assessments; an assessor will visit candidates in their workplace to train, assess and review them on a regular basis.

What are the entry requirements?

This NVQ is a work-oriented qualification and is suitable for those who are employed in a related role; a minimum of three years' relevant experience is required.

How will I learn?

Teaching is workshop-based and simulation will be by short practical and related knowledge tests for each unit of the course. When a given number of units have been successfully completed and appropriate evidence from the work place collected, an NVQ will be awarded.
This training is delivered on site (at the employer's premises/construction site).

What subjects will I study?

This course is designed to be part of a package of training for people employed in carpentry and joinery roles.

The following areas will be covered:

  • Use and safety of scaffolding and ladders
  • Identifying appropriate materials
  • Timber partition construction
  • Use of portable and fixed machines
  • Site supervision and management
  • Laying floors
  • Traditional and truss roof construction
  • Fitting of doors
  • Window frame construction
  • Fitting staircases
  • Fitting kitchen units and worktops
  • Wall panelling
  • Health and safety/first aid
  • Fitting and fixing locks and letter plates

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on your ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with your work. This will include your knowledge and understanding of the unit and evidence that you provide to identify your performance.

The assessor assigned to you will agree what you need to provide as suitable evidence in relation to your own work situation and job role.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Students can go on to study for the Site carpentry and Joinery NVQ at Level 3.
