This qualification is ideal for novice computer users wishing to demonstrate and improve their computing skills for the benefit of themselves and future employers.  The basic ECDL qualification is broken down into two levels: ECDL Essentials and ECDL Extra which can be taken individually to obtain single certificates, or together to achieve the overall ECDL qualification.

ECDL Essentials is a Level 1 ITQ Award and consists of 3 modules designed to give a basic introduction to computing with relevant skills in using the basic tools required for an IT user today.  The qualification will help you to develop competency and confidence in essential basic IT skills.
Employers can obtain various benefits by providing employees with the opportunity to work towards this qualification.  These are likely to include savings in time and money through increased staff performance, reduction in IT problems, increased job satisfaction amongst staff and increased staff retention.  Encouraging staff to achieve this qualification demonstrates an investment in people and could potentially aid recruitment.

How long is the course?

10 x 3 hour sessions

What are the entry requirements?

This is not intended as a total beginners’ course so it is essential that you have used a computer before and have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft applications.  It is strongly recommended that you have first achieved an entry level ICT qualification such as E-qualskills.

How will I learn?

This is an interactive course, each person will be allocated a computer; the tutor will provide guidance through step by step instruction and demonstrations where appropriate.

What subjects will I study?

To obtain this qualification you must successfully achieve all the following modules:

• IT User Fundamentals (3 credits)
• Using Email and the Internet (5 credits)
• Security for IT Users (1 credit)

How will I be assessed?

There is a 45 minute test at the end of each module.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Achievement of this award is a good starting point from which you can build a career and qualification path that can be taken to higher levels:
E-Type (Level 2 Key board Skills)
BCS ECDL Extra (Level 2)
NVQ Business Administration (Level 2)
