Barbering NVQ Diploma
What qualification will I achieve?
NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Barbering. This qualification will show that you have the skills and knowledge to do your job role effectively, by meeting the National Occupational Standards.
How long is the course?
The course is approximately 9 hours per week for the academic year (Monday and Tuesday including 1 evening). This will include practical work in the college salon as well as theory work and home case study work. The college salon is run as a commercial salon and is open to the general public.
What are the entry requirements?
The course requirements are, a desired minimum of Level 1 in Hairdressing, or the equivalent. Other relevant experience will be taken into account at interview. A work placement period will be required as part of this course to gain experience in men’s barbering.
What subjects will I study?
You will learn about:
- Maintaining effective and safe methods of working when cutting and styling. (Health and Safety).
- Cutting and styling men’s hair, in a variety of looks, using basic clipper and scissor cutting techniques, such as, different neckline, outline shapes.
- Creating basic patterns in the hair.
- Facial haircutting.
- Providing clients with affective aftercare advice.
How will I be assessed?
All practical work assessments are completed in the college salon. You are required to provide your own clients, for your assessments in the college salon. You will also prove your knowledge of practical work through oral questions. There are assignments and on line tests in each area. A portfolio of evidence is built up throughout the course, which include your home/work case studies.
This is a professional qualification and high standards of personal appearance and conduct will be required. Most assessments are carried out in the salon and must be to a professional standard.
Are there any additional costs?
The dress code for this course is purple tunic and black trousers, cardigan, flat black shoes, and a name badge. Male tunics are available.
You will be required to purchase a basic hairdressing kit s that will enable you to practice at home. Information and order forms are available at the interview.
The college provides all other equipment and tools needed for the course.
