Computerised Accounts City & Guilds (8989) Level 1
The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to operate SAGE software to carry out routine accounting tasks. These will include being able to create accounts, process accounting information in respect of the sales and purchase ledger, understanding how to use batch control sheets and being able to produce accounting reports such as trial balance, customer activity reports and supplier details reports.
This qualification is aimed at candidates seeking a first qualification in the practical use of computerised accounting systems.
Candidates who are studying Computerised Accounts Level 1 with the college will find it useful to study Book-keeping and Accounts Levels 1 and 2 in parallel, to enhance their background understanding of the subject and the theories behind it.
What qualification will I achieve?
City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Computerised Accounts (8989).
How long is the course?
This is a 30 hour programme and is typically delivered over 10 three-hour evening sessions.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements although students should have a reasonable level of numeracy and basic IT skills. An understanding of the terms used in basic book-keeping is recommended, therefore candidates with limited or no accounts experience may benefit from completing City & Guilds Level 1.
Award in Book-keeping and Accounts prior to, or alongside, the Computerised Accounts course.
How will I learn?
Through a mixture of tutor delivery, practical exercises, active participation and group discussions.
What subjects will I study?
The course covers the following topics:
- Create accounts using computerised software; (adding new accounts to the purchase ledger, adding new accounts to the sales ledger, creating new accounts in the nominal ledger)
- Process accounting information using computerised software; (processing information in respect of the sales ledger, processing information in respect of the purchase ledger, entering initial capital, processing information involving transactions using different tax rates, processing information in respect of cash and cheque payments and receipts)
- Understand how to use batch control sheets; (calculating and reconciling batch totals as required)
- Produce reports using computerised accounts software; (Trial balances, supplier activity reports, customer activity reports, supplier details reports, customer details reports, nominal ledger accounts reports)
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is by a one-hour exam containing a number of practical tasks. The examination will take the form of a case study in which it is assumed the candidate is working in an accounts department using a computerised accounts system.
Candidate’s performance will be assessed by checking the printouts produced, for errors.
To be awarded a Pass at Level 1, the following criteria must be met:

Other errors: 5 errors permitted
To be awarded a First Class Pass at Level 1, the following criteria must be met:
Processing errors: 100% accuracy
Other errors: 2 errors permitted
Errors are catergorised as follows:
Processing errors
- An incorrect amount processed.
- Failure to process a transaction.
- A transaction processed to an incorrect account.
- Failure to print a remittance advice, statement or invoice.
- Other errors
- Typographical errors on dates, names, addresses or reference numbers.
- Incorrect or missing batch totals (counts as one error)
- Omission of reference numbers or other data
