NVQ Levels 2 & 3 in Accounting

This NVQ is a work-based qualification that is suitable for anyone who undertakes accounting/book-keeping activities.

What qualification will I achieve?

Association of Accounting Technicians NVQ Level 2 and/or 3 in Accounting.

How long is the course?

The NVQ is work-based and is designed to reflect the skills and knowledge of people who work in accountancy/book-keeping. The qualification is taken over 12-18 months depending on each individual.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, only that the candidates undertake related activities.

How will I learn?

You are usually employed for 30 hours per week. You train both in the workplace and at Furness College. You will work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

You will also:

  • Receive tuition to support the underpinning knowledge required for your NVQ.
  • Have the opportunity to work towards additional qualifications relevant to your employment.
  • Receive regular monitoring and assessment in both the workplace and at College.

What subjects will I study?

NVQ Level 2 in Accounting

This will include:

  • Recording income and receipts
  • Making and recording payments
  • Preparing ledger balances and initial trial balances
  • Supplying information for management control
  • Working with computers
  • Contributing to the maintenance of a healthy, safe and productive working environment;
  • and Achieving personal effectiveness.


NVQ Level 3 in Accounting

This will include:

  • Maintaining financial records and preparing accounts
  • Recording and evaluating costs and revenues
  • Preparing reports and returns
  • Working with computers and Contributing to the maintenance of a healthy, safe and productive working environment.

How will I be assessed?

  • The NVQ is assessed on practical aptitude, a portfolio of work and external assessment.
  • Key Skills is assessed by examination and a portfolio of evidence.

What opportunities will this lead to?

From Level 3 into Chartered Accountancy or Higher Education.
